Getting ready for Calving......

Calving is an incredibly busy time on a Dairy Farm and getting everything ready, clean and sterilized and having spares if things break makes for a much more civilized and manageable time.

I prepare lots of home cooked meals in the freezer and we calve 450 cows with most calving happening over a three week spread. We have extra staff on at this busy time and all our staff work five days on and two days off each week. Its important to look after your staff well so they in turn look after your cows and calves well. Stressed animals can get sick and are hard to work with, we only employ staff who are kind to our animals and that way it is a great working environment for everyone including our cows.

The Calves are absolutely adorable and I look forward to calving every year, even though it is a particularly busy time.
