Huntaway Farm Dogs have an incredible work ethic.....they want to work rain or shine and are always delighted to have a job. Huntaways are highly intelligent as a breed and they pick things up very quickly, often only needing to be shown once or twice.
Working dog kennels are very important, they need to be kept warm and dry in wet weather and have cooler areas of shade and plenty of fresh water when the weather is hotter. We have insulated our kennels and they all have fresh hay bedding that is changed regularly. The kennels are designed so they enter the kennel and go around another corner so they are completely protected from the wind and rain. The small outer runs are also covered to provide shade or protection from the rain.
We have a larger area nicknamed the puppy play pen, where all the dogs hang out and socialize together when they arent working. This has a large grass area, small stone area and bark chips to keep the larger outer run area totally free from mud. This keeps them healthy and all are dogs are mellow enough to chew on bones together in the larger shared run area. Some even literally share a bone together.
This is a great safe space for them to all hang out together when they are very young before they start working and at various times of the year like calving when the dogs are not used much at all to avoid unnecessary stress with calving cows and new cows learning the new milking routine.
This area is close to the house so great for security, the dogs will bark at any vehicle that turns up and when they are younger they watch with facination older dogs working and bringing cows out of the paddock. The older dogs are often used to show the young dogs the ropes and we put a lot of time and training into the dogs so they all have excellent temperment and retire easily into the farm house later.
