Bruce on the right has grown into an incredible working Dog. He is very calm working with the cows and he has a big deep bark, so he has been upgraded to a Trainer and young Oxford who is growing before our eyes has begun basic training and comes along to help get the Cows out of the paddock and watches and learns from Bruce.
He is finding his voice and has the makings of another excellent working Huntaway, he has quite a deep bark for such a young pup and on day four.... he was getting the hang of it all nicely. Which is incredibly quick, even for a Huntaway. This breed native to New Zealand are renound for their intelligence, big deep bark and willingness to work. Bruce was an absolute natural when he started and we find using a well established Dog to show the new Pup the ropes is a simple system where they pick it all up easily and know exactly is expected of them.
Before they start out on the farm, they have mastered sitting, heel and recall and keeping it a positive learning environment sets them up for keen willing Dogs that want to work for you. Farm dogs are incredibly intelligent and they want to work so encouragement works well for building them up to be the best they can be. They need high energy food with plenty of protein and keeping them warm with jackets in Winter and hay for bedding in their kennels prevents them losing weight in the colder months.
By utter fluke they both have almost identical markings, other than Oxford having a small darker patch on his front feet and Bruce is becoming a slightly lighter tan as he gets older.
